New Tree School is dedicated to the teaching and exploration of best ways to plant, grow, preserve, and protect trees through natural and sustainable methods. Our philosophy is rooted in a natural systems approach based on sound biological and ecological understanding. We believe that good arboriculture begins with an exploration of how trees grow, thrive, and survive in their native habitats and communities.
We teach that the inner and communal lives of trees are best learned in the woods and through a microscope. Courses are typically one full day in length and include both classroom and outdoor activities when weather permits. Class size is limited to a small number of participants in order to create an active and flexible learning environment.
New Tree School courses draw upon the disciplines of tree biology and ecology, ornithology, arboriculture, entomology, native horticulture, landscape design, and other disciplines vital to the natural systems approach. Our faculty and guest presenters and guides are recognized experts in these fields. NTS partners with Arboriculture Canada Training and Education to offer courses in urban forestry throughout North America.
Faculty: Jack Phillips is a Registered Consulting Arborist and principal teacher of New Tree School. He also teaches tree biology and care for Arboriculture Canada Training and Education, and consults and teaches throughout North America. He will be joined by local experts and adjunct faculty.
Jack Phillips and NTS professional partners offer landscape and tree consulting services for government agencies and private companies. Past projects include Omaha Downtown Arboretum, Emanuel Cemetery (Charleston, SC), New Skete Monastary (Cambridge, NY), City of McCook, NE, Hitchcock Nature Center (Honey Creek, IA), and Omaha’s Open Door Mission.
New Tree School also offers extension services to property owners in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa for the diagnosis of tree problems and for general tree and landscape design and care.
